Improve Your ‘DanceAbility’ with anew class for disabled adults

Strictly Come Dancing, So You Think You Dance, Got to Dance. It’s obvious the popularity of dance is growing. YMCA London South West runs over 15 dance classes a week across it’s centre’s and in February will be launching ‘DanceAbility’; a dance class for disabled adults of any age.

Thanks to funding from PlaySport London, the first six weeks will be free of charge for the classes held at YMCA Wimbledon and YMCA Hawker Centre (North Kingston). ‘DanceAbility’ will cover a variety of dance types including disco, latin and salsa. The classes kick off on 11th February, 1pm to 2pm at YMCA Wimbledon and 12th February, 11.15am to 12.15pm at YMCA Hawker Centre.

YMCA London South West is a local charity whose gyms in Wimbledon (YMCA Wimbledon) and North Kingston (YMCA Hawker Centre) both have accreditation from the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI). The Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) is a programme supporting the fitness industry to become more welcoming and ensuring facilities meet the needs of both disabled and non-disabled people. To be accredited the facilities have to be fully accessible, the equipment provided must be able to be used by everyone and YMCA LSW staff must be trained to IFI standards.

As well as IFI accreditation, YMCA LSW offers fitness, dance and sport classes specifically designed for disabled users and their carers. Every Monday at YMCA Hawker Centre, three classes are run which are specifically targeted to people with learning disabilities and were set up with the Learning Disability Services in Kingston. Line Dancing is the morning session, with Yoga or a Gym session on offer after lunch.

The Charity is also involved in the Exercise Referral Programme, where over 16’s with health related conditions can use our facilities at a reduced rate. The individuals are referred to the Association via their GP, health professional or social worker.
