More than a Gym Thing at YMCA South West

Come January it seems everything is on sale or on special offer. YMCA London South West’s health and fitness membership is on special offer too, but for a very different reason than normal. For each new member that joins before 28th February 2010, YMCA LSW will donate part of the membership fee to YMCA Andheri Boys Home in Mumbai.

The Andheri home has been running since 1964, helping boys who have been orphaned or whose families are unable to support them. The YMCA cares for them, providing food, shelter, social activities and (most importantly) the education they need to build a better future.

Leo, a worker at the Andheri Home came to the UK during 2009 and visited the YMCA. Debbie Camp, YMCA LSWs Director of Sports, Health, Exercise and Fitness remembers one story he told about the 'Love in a Box' Christmas presents the boys receive each year. “Each boy is given a shoe box full of little bits and bobs that our own children here in the UK would take for granted - crayons, notebooks, puzzles, toy cars, etc. The boys really look forward to their gifts, often the only ones they have ever received, but they aren't allowed to keep everything in their parcel. Each child must choose one item to give away, so that they can experience how good it feels to give as well as to receive”.

YMCA LSWs Chief Executive, Stuart Leamy is excited about the offer. “We are delighted to be doing something to help the YMCA in India with the fantastic work that they are doing. Like them our work is very much focused at a local level but we are both part of the worldwide family of YMCAs that is spread over 120 countries and has been helping people for over 150 years. We believe that what we are offering here is unique in the fitness industry and we hope that people find the prospect of helping these boys as inviting as meeting their own fitness needs.”

For every annual membership taken up before at any of the Charities three gyms (YMCA Surbiton, YMCA Wimbledon or YMCA Hawker Centre) the end of February, YMCA London South West will donate £33 to the home and for every monthly membership, £10. These sums sound modest, but go a long way in Mumbai, where every £10 has the purchasing power of £27 (UBS Prices & Earnings Index).
